November 19 @ 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Cempohualxochitl / Aztec Marigold Dye Bath

Join us for a free two-hour session on cempohualxochitl, or Aztec marigold, and how its petals yield natural pigment. As Día de Muertos celebrations wind down, we’ll think critically about waste. We’ll ask what can be done with this festivity’s remnants.

You’ll work with cempasúchil in dried, powdered, and fresh forms. Together, we’ll turn it into color medicine for the coming fall and winter. Then you’ll use resist techniques to create tie-dye patterns on bandanas! You’re welcome to bring your own scoured and mordanted pieces too.

This event is part of Art in the Garden and Art and AgriCulture. Critically and creatively engage with a diversity of artmaking techniques that open you up to deeper dialogue on place and your lived environments. Explore your relationship to food and agriculture, and the histories, stories, and traditions that shape the ways we grow, prepare, and share food.
