Art in the Garden
December 17 @ 5:00pm - 6:00pm

Flax: Foodways, Fiber Art, & Ancestral Agricultural Histories in Cloth (Part 1)
Join us for a free two-part workshop on flax, a flower grown for food and fiber. You’re welcome to attend one session or both.
In the first, you’ll learn about the plant’s ecology and ethnobotanical history. You’ll taste a few simple recipes and hear how they tie to ancestral foodways and nutrition. Then you’ll turn its raw material into handmade sheets. You’ll lay the fresh pulls over armatures to build paper assemblages.
The second session follows directly after. It picks up the farming story and turns to linen. This event is part of Art in the Garden. Critically and creatively engage with a diversity of artmaking techniques that open you up to deeper dialogue on place and your lived environments.
FACILITATOR
Mallory is an artist and landworker who works with plants and people to explore care and repair. Through papermaking, art journaling, circlekeeping, gardening, and plantcraft, she invites others to explore with her how to be in relationship with ecological loss and the grief of climate chaos through rituals of attention, care, and stewardship.
ACCESSIBILITY
The kitchen/classroom is wheelchair accessible; with advance notice we can add a mat path across the greenhouse’s pebbled ground (garden entrance has a small raised threshold; garden paths are grass).
Tables adjust height; backless benches/stools available.
Kitchen is shared—we avoid peanuts but can’t guarantee a nut-free space; water provided in refillable pitchers.
First aid on-site; nearest AED is one building away.
Nearest restrooms are ~1 min walk; a gender-neutral restroom is available by key from staff.
Not a scent-free space (essential oils used in class), though we ventilate and welcome masking/distancing.

All Greenhouse Education Center events happen rain or shine.
