SUMMARY:Family Farmacy x City of Forest Day
DESCRIPTION:Taste\, touch\, write\, and walk with the trees that shape our city.\n\n\nIn partnership with Forest for All\, join The Hort at the Greenhouse & Education Center for City of Trees Day in NYC—a celebration of the vibrant forest woven through our neighborhoods by the street trees\, parks\, and woodlands that sustain us.\n\n  \nActivities (11 AM – 1PM)\nTree Tea Blends & Tastings\nNature Artmaking \nThis is a free\, family-friendly event\, inviting all ages to connect with tree medicine\, artmaking\, and ecological wonder.\n\n\n\nNote: We very generously interpret family here at the greenhouse. We know that welcoming everyone of all ages makes us storng and vibrant. Elders\, children\, youth\, young adults–everyone is welcome and appreciated. We know that caregivers come in many forms–chosen family\, birth family\, those who need the love of family are all welcome. \nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nOur kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. Our learning garden has grass paths\, and the entrance is through a gate with a small\, raised entrance. Our tables can be lowered/raised\, and we have several backless benches or stools. Our kitchen is in regular use\, and while we try to cook without peanuts\, much of our cookware is shared and we cannot guarantee a nut-free environment. We have a first aid kit\, and the closest AED is in another building several yards away. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers. \nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces. \nOur closest bathrooms are a building away\, about a one-minute walk. A gender neutral bathroom is also available\, and this is accessible by key which you can request from staff. We are not a scent-free zone\, and because herbalism classes take place here\, cannot guarantee that the site will be clear of any essential oil smells. If you have needs not addressed here\, please reach out to Mallory Craig at mcraig@thehort.org.

SUMMARY:Recipes and Rituals for Community Care
DESCRIPTION:We heal together in our kitchens\, gardens\, and shared spaces.\n\n\nWhat does it mean to heal in community? What does it feel like when we extend care to ourselves and the collective? How do plants and our local ecologies care for us? How can we care for the plants and local ecologies in return?\nWeave in rituals and recipes into both your own self-care and community care practices through weekly explorations in herbal arts\, somatic movement in the greenhouse and garden\, folk remedies\, and other wild-crafts and meditative activities that foster a deeper connection to plants to care for the body\, mental health\, and the people you move with.\nEach week\, be guided by a guest herbalist\, healing artist\, or wellness practitioner who will help you create your own toolkit and apothecary for self and communal care.\n\n\n  \n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine.\nWhen inside the greenhouse and kitchen we will open our double-doors and windows to vent the space and encourage masking and social distancing when in more closed-in spaces.\nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. Drinking water is made available in refillable pitchers.\nOur closest bathrooms are a building away\, about a one-minute walk.

SUMMARY:Recipes & Rituals for Community Care: Rooted and Grounded Steps Forward
DESCRIPTION:Self-exploration and community connection through expressive artmaking and grounding in the garden.\n\n\nIn this reflective and restorative open craft session\, get crafty with us by working with chancletas\, or flip flops\, and various charms and yarns to create your own footware to serve you in a gentle stroll in the garden. As we gather around the craft table surrounded by plants in the garden\, we’ll talk about what it is we need to stay rooted and grounded through our own embodied artmaking. When our creations are complete\, we’ll take them on a stroll in the garden\, taking a walking meditation to engage the land as witness and teacher.\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Luz is a Harlem native of Dominican decent. She is an active greenhouse community member\, lover of crochet\, and all things nature.\n\n\n\nWhat does it mean to heal in community? What does it feel like when we extend care to ourselves and the collective? How do plants and our local ecologies care for us? How can we care for the plants and local ecologies in return?\n \nWeave in rituals and recipes into your own self-care and community care practices through weekly explorations in herbal arts\, somatic movement in the greenhouse and garden\, folk remedies\, and other wild-crafts and meditative activities that foster a deeper connection to plants to care for the body\, mental health\, and the people you move with. \n \nEach week\, be guided by a guest herbalist\, healing artist\, or wellness practitioner who will help you create your own toolkit and apothecary for self and communal care.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. SUMMARY:CSA Supper Club: On the Farms that Feed Us
DESCRIPTION:How did we get to the mass industrial farming dominating our foodsheds? What does that mean for how we eat now? What futures can we imagine?\n\n\nJoin us for CSA Supper Club at the Greenhouse where we’ll upack this week’s CSA box and take time to harvest from the garden\, to return around the table as we wash and prepare our greens\, as we take time to process our feelings and how we’re coping with recent food safety alarms. \nTogether\, we’ll learn more about the impact larger industrial farming has on the climate\, our local ecologies\, and our health. We’ll look together at how we got here in this current food system dominated by industrial agriculture\, and look to the greens before us grown on a small-scale regenerative farm to help us imagine alternatives for our farming futures. \nSharron\, our chef for the evening\, will share how food is medicine\, and specifically\, how fresh food from CSA is medicine for our times of harmful extraction and abuse to the environment. Together\, we’ll name how we are coping with some of the gaps in safety and regulation of foods\, polluted waterways\, food insecurity and other troubles we’re finding ourselves impacted by our food system. We’ll end the evening nourishing ourselves with farm and garden greens\, and daring ourselves to dream\,rembering the work that came before us\, finding ways to imagine how to reach for other ways of feeding ourselves and each other.\n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Sharron Cannon\nSharron Cannon is a PhD candidate in Naturopathic Health Sciences\, dedicated to advancing the clinical study of the Endocannabinoid system. With a background as a film and television executive\, she now thrives as an facilitator at the Greenhouse & Education Center at Denny Farrell Riverbank State Park. Her passion lies in outreach and promoting holistic healthcare\, emphasizing the transformative power of using food as medicine. You can find her supporting the work of Black Farmer’s United\, and working as a caregiver with people with HIV and AIDS to bring the transformative power of food as medicine.\n\n\n\nCooking\, sharing\, and storytelling through the harvest of the season. \nHistory\, place\, and imagination are all deeply rooted in what and how we grow and eat. \nEach Friday evening\, this supper club gathers around ingredients of the week–produce grown in the garden and food from our local CSA. A CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) is rooted in the idea that community members share in the risks and rewards of farming. By committing to a season’s harvest\, we support farmers through the lands’ and our current food system’s uncertainties and in return\, receive food that is grown in integrity and largely outside of the current extractive and exploitive\, harmful food systems. \nTogether\, we’ll gather to deepen our relationships with the sources of our food and our empathy for the people’s whose hands that food has passed through. \nThrough collaborative cooking\, recipe-sharing\, and conversations around the table\, we explore the cultural\, ecological\, and personal dimensions of food. Drawing inspiration from our kitchen’s stories\, cookbooks\, and the week’s harvest\, we’ll discover how the simple act of preparing and sharing a meal can connect us more deeply to land-workers\, food-workers\, and to the land theirself. \nThis is a free drop-in program. Come to every class or come to one or two that you are available for. \n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path. SUMMARY:Art & AgriCulture: Tending the Tides
DESCRIPTION:Tend to the tides within and craft in community while learning about aquaculture and reflecting on lessons from life in the littoral zone.\n\n\nTend to your own internal inter-tidal ecosystems through this open-ended crafting session in which we work with oyster shells\, driftwood\, found sea glass\, and our own sculptural sea-forms on paper as we chat through the health of our marine habitat\, learn about both regenerative and harmful aquaculture practices\, and explore the future of our foodways so reliant on our coasts over a bowl of seaweed broth. \nBeyond learning about the vital role seaweed plays in filtering water\, sheltering marine species\, and capturing carbon\, we’ll draw powerful metaphor from estuary flow and the ever-shifting intertidal zones\, inviting us to learn how we can be both stewards to our waterways as well as be in reciprocol relationship\, gleaning lessons from these special habitats. \n\n\n\nYour Facilitator: Junell Banks\nJunell Banks is a creative visionary from Harlem\, who blends her passions for creative direction\, youth empowerment\, and self-love advocacy. Through her multifaceted initiatives\, she embodies a commitment to inspiring those around her to embrace their authentic selves with creativity and confidence.\nFind more from her at @ju.thatsit on Instagram.\n\n\n\n“Another thing we lost is culture. . . look at the word agriculture. We lost that connection. And so now it’s going back to the culture of agriculture. Why do we grow the food that we do?” – Karen Washington\n\nWhy do we grow the foods we do? How is culture tied to our local foodways and agricultural systems? What stories of nourishment are you hungry to tell? What creative acts are you being called to digest? In this weekly series\, explore various techniques and practices introduced by visiting artists who will lead us in expressing our relationship to food\, agriculture\, and the histories and stories that shape how we connect with our foodways. \n\nThrough various artmaking techniques like bookmaking\, printmaking\, collage\, sculpture\, natural-pigment making and painting\, alternative photography processes\, participants will create artwork that begins to answer the question: Where is the culture in our agricultural system? \n\nThis is a free drop-in program. Come to every class to build on your skill or come to one or two that you are available for. Explore your relationship to food and agriculture and the ways our food systems can connect us more deeply to our local ecosystems and communities.\n\n\n\nWorkshops are rain or shine. \nAccessibility: Our kitchen/classroom space is wheelchair accessible. With prior planning\, we can add a few small mats onto the pebbled ground of greenhouse to make a small wheel-chair accessible path.
